Pikes Wines
Clare Valley, South Australia

Pikes Wines is a family owned and run business established in 1984. The Winery and vineyards are situated in the historic and picturesque Polish Hill River sub region of the Clare Valley. Pikes are well known for their Riesling, a dry, fruit driven style which has crisp lemon/lime acidity, however their reds certainly deserve equal recognition, full bodied styles with subtle oak treatment which allow the varietal characteristics to show through.

4 Stars James Halliday 2003-04.

Pikes Riesling 2003

Brilliant pale green with subtle, but intense aromas of citrus fruit and minerals. Soft, ripe citrus fruit characters with good mid palate richness, with nice crisp acidity.
Top 20 Rieslings Huon Hooke SMH (2002).
Robert Parker Wine Advocate 87/100 (2001),
Wine Spectator 87/100 (2001).

Pikes Chardonnay 2001

Rich, ripe with melon like fruit aromas and grilled cashew nut oak characters complemented by a touch of creaminess. The palate is rich and soft with excellent texture and good persistence of flavour is evident. It has a lovely soft, creamy finish that seems to go on forever. Cellar for 3-5 years.

Pikes Cabernet 2000

Gently fragrant with aromas of blackcurrants and plums overlaying some lovely cedary French oak. Ripe, sweet fruit and fine dry tannins combine nicely to give good texture and persistence to the wine. Cellar for up to 10 years.
Robert Parker 87/100 1999 vintage,
James Halliday 86 (1998).

Pikes Shiraz 2001

Rich aromas of ripe, dark berry fruits with hints of chocolate and black olive. Focused flavours of dark berries and chocolate backed up by good acidity and fine drying tannins. A quite intense wine, which will cellar well for 5-9 years.
James Halliday 89 points (1998),
Robert Parker 90/100 (1996).

Pikes Shiraz 2002

Concentrated aromas of spices black olives and prunes with some charry French oak adding some intrigue. Perhaps a hint of chocolate and mocha also. Full flavoured and firm but with enough sweet, ripe fruit to maintain balance. Prunes and black olives are the dominant flavours here. Oak is in the background. A complex wine when cellar well for 5-8 years.
